Israel has released 55 Palestinians, including the director of Gaza’s main hospital, who were detained in November during a raid on Shifa Hospital. The director, Mohammed Abu Selmia, accused Israeli authorities of subjecting Palestinian detainees to daily physical and psychological humiliation. Israel denies these allegations, claiming that Hamas and other militant groups use hospitals for military purposes.
The Israeli military reported that around 20 projectiles were fired from Gaza at communities near the border, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Israel launched the war in response to a Hamas attack that killed mostly civilians and led to the abduction of hundreds of people. Since then, Israeli offensives and bombardments have resulted in the deaths of over 37,700 people in Gaza, according to the territory’s Health Ministry.
The Palestinian health officials have reported that several hospitals have been forced to shut down or reduce services due to Israeli raids, endangering civilians. The lack of access to food, medicine, and basic goods has left people in Gaza dependent on aid, and there are concerns of a potential risk of genocide in the region. The United Nations court has raised these concerns, although Israel strongly denies any accusations of genocide in Gaza.
