U.S. Ski & Snowboard has set a new standard for fundraising success among National Governing Bodies, bringing in $19 million in 2022, $14 million more than any other NGB. With shifting economic challenges and stagnant USOPC funding, NGBs are increasingly turning to foundations and donor giving to boost revenue. A majority of NGBs have seen donations increase, with many starting or reviving foundations and hiring staff dedicated to fundraising efforts.
The sponsorship landscape has been challenging, with nonendemic sponsors slow to return post-pandemic, and USOPC funding locked in through LA28. Many NGBs are focusing on donor giving as a reliable revenue stream that they can control. U.S. Ski & Snowboard has excelled in this area, with nearly 50% of revenue coming from its foundation.
The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Foundation is leading the charge in philanthropic giving, aiming to raise $500 million ahead of the 2028 LA Games. NGBs can partner with the foundation on major gift initiatives to bring in donors, boosting revenue significantly. USA Basketball and USA Swimming are among those that have launched foundations to drive revenue growth.
Other strategies for success include dedicating staff to fundraising efforts, expanding foundation boards to include more donors, and tapping into affluent membership bases for support. USA Triathlon saw a doubling of donations after hiring a major gifts officer, emphasizing the impact of focused fundraising efforts.
Overall, NGBs are adapting to the evolving financial landscape by prioritizing donor giving as a key revenue stream, with a focus on building strong foundations and partnerships to ensure financial stability and growth.
