In a tragic incident on February 14, 2017, Brush High School hockey player Alec Kornet, 17, passed away due to sudden cardiac arrest while at practice at the Cleveland Heights Recreation Pavilion ice rink. It was later determined that Alec’s death was caused by an enlarged heart. Since this heartbreaking event, Alec’s parents, Scott and Stephanie Kornet, have dedicated themselves to preventing similar incidents from occurring to other young individuals.
The Kornets have made it their mission to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and advocate for preventative measures to protect young athletes. They have worked tirelessly to promote the importance of heart screenings and early detection of heart conditions in young athletes. They have also collaborated with organizations and schools to provide access to cardiac screenings for student-athletes and to educate coaches, parents, and students about the signs and risks of cardiac issues.
Through their efforts, the Kornets hope to prevent other families from experiencing the same devastating loss they have endured. They are actively working to ensure that young athletes receive the necessary support and resources to protect their heart health and overall well-being.
The Kornets’ commitment to raising awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and advocating for preventative measures serves as a tribute to Alec’s memory and a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing heart health in youth sports. Their efforts are making a meaningful impact in the community and helping to create a safer environment for young athletes.
