Bill authorizing natural gas pipelines passes Ohio House

The Ohio House of Representatives recently passed House Bill 349 (EnergizeOhio), which aims to create natural gas pipeline incentive areas within the state. The bill allows for the establishment of locally designated zones with incentives to build natural gas pipelines and related infrastructure. This includes authorizing revolving loans to local governments to acquire easements for natural gas pipelines.

State Rep. Tim Barhorst (R-Fort Loramie) expressed gratitude for his colleagues’ support in recognizing the importance of expanding access to natural gas across Ohio. He highlighted the economic development opportunities that could arise from reducing natural gas deserts in the state.

The Department of Development is mandated to publish a map of areas receiving loans under the EnergizeOhio program and inform the Tax Commissioner of any designated zones. State Rep. Don Jones (R-Freeport) emphasized the benefits of creating EnergizeOhio zones in reducing dependence on foreign energy and strengthening Ohio’s natural gas infrastructure.

The bill allocates $20 million to the EnergizeOhio Program Loan Fund for 2025, with further funding and support expected in the future. House Bill 349 will now head to the Ohio Senate for further deliberation and potential approval.

This initiative is seen as a positive step towards boosting energy accessibility, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the state’s natural gas infrastructure. It aligns with efforts to tap into Ohio’s abundant natural gas resources and reduce reliance on imported energy sources.
