Ohioans can legally set off fireworks on certain holidays, thanks to legislation signed by Gov. Mike DeWine in 2022. The law allows the detonation of 1.4G consumer-grade fireworks on specific days, as long as local laws do not prohibit it. These fireworks must have a limited amount of flash powder and can be set off on dates such as July 3, 4 and 5, as well as other holidays like Labor Day, New Year’s Eve, and Cinco de Mayo.
There are restrictions in place, such as a minimum age requirement of 18 to handle the fireworks, a distance requirement of 150 feet from spectators, and a ban on using fireworks while under the influence. Violating these rules can result in a first-degree misdemeanor charge.
Fireworks purchased outside of Ohio are not permitted to be discharged in the state, and only those bought from licensed retailers within Ohio can be used. Some municipalities, like Reynoldsburg and New Albany, allow residents to use fireworks, while others, such as Bexley and Columbus, maintain a ban.
Residents are advised to check their local ordinances to ensure compliance with the law. Overall, Ohioans can enjoy setting off fireworks on certain holidays, as long as they follow the specified guidelines and restrictions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
