former US official warns of potential disastrous war with Hezbollah due to political motivations

Former US military intelligence analyst, Harrison Mann, who quit last month over US support for Israel’s war in Gaza, has warned that Israel risks going to war against Hezbollah to secure Benjamin Netanyahu’s political survival. He believes this move could lead to mass civilian deaths in Lebanon and Israel and could potentially pull the US into a regional conflict. Despite the optimistic assessment by US officials that Netanyahu’s government is not seeking a fight with Hezbollah, Mann argues that there is a high risk of Israel starting a disastrous war on its northern border for internal political reasons.

Mann points out that Israel’s military establishment sees Hezbollah as a growing threat that must be confronted sooner rather than later, leading to a potential miscalculation of the costs of a new war in Lebanon. He predicts that an Israeli offensive against Hezbollah would involve decapitation strikes and targeting civilian residential areas, which could trigger a mass rocket and missile attack from Hezbollah, overwhelming Israel’s defences and causing significant destruction in the country. The IDF’s ground offensive into southern Lebanon could result in high Israeli casualties, making it difficult for the US to avoid involvement at Netanyahu’s urging.

Mann believes that escalating tensions with Iran could also increase the risk of a broader conflict in the region, as the Israel-Hezbollah conflict unfolds. His resignation from the military in protest of US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza has garnered support from colleagues and others who share his concerns. As a descendant of European Jews, Mann feels a moral responsibility to speak out against the violence and displacement of innocent Palestinians.
