The American steel industry is facing challenges as Ohio’s senators and the United Steelworkers Union raise concerns about a surge in unfair Mexican steel imports. Data from 2022 shows significant increases in iron and steel imports from Mexico, putting American jobs at risk. United Steelworkers Union President David McCall, along with Sen. Sherrod Brown and Cleveland Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves, are urging the Biden Administration to take action to protect American steel jobs.
In addition to the issue of unfair imports, there is also opposition to the planned sale of US Steel to Japanese-based Nippon. McCall and Goncalves believe the sale violates their collective bargaining agreement and poses a threat to national security. Former President Trump has also expressed intent to block the deal if re-elected. Nippon has promised to protect union jobs, but McCall remains skeptical, citing loopholes in their agreements that could lead to layoffs and plant shutdowns.
Despite the approval of the Nippon deal by the US Steel Board, McCall and others in the industry are determined to prevent Nippon from taking over US Steel. They argue that American steel should remain owned and operated by American workers. The ongoing battle to protect American steel jobs continues as stakeholders push for action to address the influx of unfair imports and prevent the sale of US Steel to foreign entities.
