Lessons in Security for the EU From the Massive IT Outage


An extensive outage caused by a software update defect from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike raised concerns about the importance of cybersecurity in Europe. The outage impacted hospitals, banks, broadcasters, and airports, highlighting the need for companies and individuals to be better trained in cybersecurity. Nathalie Devillier from the EU European Cyber Competence Centre emphasized the importance of questioning the location of cloud and IT security providers, advocating for them to be within the European space to avoid reliance on foreign technology solutions.

The incident served as a wake-up call for the EU to prioritize cybersecurity and ensure that critical services are not affected by software glitches. Devillier’s insights shed light on the importance of investing in digital security and training individuals and businesses to safeguard against potential cyber threats. As Europe continues to navigate the digital landscape, measures must be taken to fortify cybersecurity defenses and reduce dependency on external technological solutions.
