Ohio Lawmakers Consider Legalizing Online Casino and Lottery Games
Several Ohio lawmakers are exploring the idea of legalizing online casino and lottery games in the state. The Study Commission on the Future of Gaming in Ohio recently released findings that highlighted the potential benefits of iLottery and iGaming offerings.
Republican Reps. Jay Edwards, Jeff LaRe, and Cindy Abrams wrote in a letter included in the study that they believe iLottery and iGaming could be a net benefit to Ohio. However, they emphasized the importance of legalizing these activities cautiously and thoughtfully.
While some industry stakeholders support the idea, others, like Dan Reinhard who lobbies on behalf of JACK Entertainment in Cleveland, have concerns about the impact on brick-and-mortar properties. There is a fear that iGaming could cannibalize traditional gambling establishments and potentially lead to job losses in the state.
The issue of problem gambling is also a concern, as indicated by the increased calls to the state’s gambling hotline in 2023. A survey in 2022 found that one-in-five Ohioans are considered at least “at-risk” gamblers.
The commission was established by House Bill 33, but has since ceased to exist. The findings and testimonies from the commission’s meetings highlight the complexities surrounding the potential legalization of online gambling in Ohio. Ohioans have already been using the illicit market for these activities, and lawmakers are considering the best approach for regulating and benefiting from these trends.
For those who are experiencing problem gambling or addiction issues, resources such as the National Problem Gambling Hotline are available to provide support and assistance.
