Speakers at Conventions: What They Nailed and What They Missed

On the third day of the Republican National Convention, JD Vance was highlighted as Donald Trump’s new running mate, with other high-profile speakers including Gov. Greg Abbott, Gov. Doug Burgum, and Donald Trump Jr. The USA TODAY Fact Check Team analyzed the claims made by the speakers.

Vance was criticized for claiming he was born in Appalachia when he was actually from Middletown, Ohio. Trump Jr. claimed that under Biden, US cities became “giant crime zones,” but data showed a decline in violent crime. Vance also stated that wages soared under Trump, which was supported by various metrics showing wage increases during Trump’s administration.

Trump’s claim of being one of the most successful businessmen in the world was disputed, with reports of six bankruptcies and legal battles. He also repeated his baseless claims of election fraud, despite overwhelming evidence that Joe Biden won the presidency fairly. A claim that there were no spy balloons over the US during the Trump administration was proven false, as Chinese spy balloons were detected.

Former President Trump’s impact on illegal immigration was exaggerated by Tom Homan and Mike Pence, with data showing that the number of people entering the country illegally increased under Trump’s administration. Gov. Abbott’s claim of 11 million immigrants crossing the US border illegally under Biden was also inaccurate, with data showing 9.4 million migrant encounters, not necessarily people freely crossing the border.
