Study finds Ohio ranks in top 10 states for gun sales

Ohio was ranked as one of the top 10 states for gun sales in 2023, with nearly 5.5 million firearms sold nationwide in the first four months of 2024. According to a study conducted by SafeHomes.org, Ohio saw 583,314 gun sales, ranking sixth in the country. The most populous states, including Texas, Florida, and California, had the highest total number of gun sales.

Despite its high number of gun sales, Ohio did not make the top 10 list when adjusted for population size, with 668 guns sold per 10,000 residents aged 21 and older. The study revealed that after peaking during the pandemic in 2020, there was a 4% decrease in overall firearm sales in Ohio from 2022 to 2023, following a national trend.

The analysis also highlighted the states with the lowest total gun sales in 2023, including the District of Columbia, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Delaware. When adjusting for population sizes, these states also sold the least number of guns per 10,000 residents.

Overall, the data indicates that gun sales fluctuated across the country in 2023, with population size playing a significant role in determining which states had the most gun sales. Despite Ohio’s high number of gun sales, it did not make the top 10 list when accounting for population size.
