The youth’s struggle for change in South Africa’s future, inspired by Nelson Mandela

After recent polls in South Africa, there is a spotlight on what remains of Nelson Mandela’s legacy in the country. Today, many young South Africans are facing high levels of unemployment and struggling to keep businesses running due to power outages. Despite the country being a democracy for thirty years now, a shocking 60 percent of youth are without jobs. This begs the question of how young people can shape the future of their nation when they are marginalized and struggling to meet basic needs.

The role of social media in mobilizing young people for change was also discussed during a recent presentation hosted by Anelise Borges. Guests Samantha Jansen, Philani Mthembu, Nickolaus Bauer, and Tessa Dooms highlighted the importance of social media in empowering young people to participate in creating the change they desire.

The panelists, including content creators and a journalist, emphasized the need for young people to use social media as a tool for activism and advocacy. They discussed the power of social media in connecting individuals, amplifying their voices, and mobilizing them for collective action.

Despite the challenges facing young South Africans today, there is hope for a brighter future through the use of social media as a platform for change. By coming together and using their voices on social media, young people can work towards creating a more inclusive and prosperous future for themselves and their country, continuing the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
