The global technology outage that occurred on Friday, July 19th has left airports and airlines struggling to recover as air travel slowly returns to normal. The outage was caused by a faulty update deployed by cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike to systems running Microsoft Windows, affecting an estimated 8.5 million devices. While Mac and Linux hosts were not impacted, airlines were forced to ground flights and airports were unable to process passengers for check-in and bag drop requirements.
At Berlin Brandenburg BER Airport in Germany, all flights were suspended, while other major airports such as Edinburgh, Melbourne, Dallas Fort Worth, Buffalo Niagara Falls, Cleveland Hopkins International, and Spanish operator AENA were also affected. Despite many services being restored by Saturday, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz warned that complete recovery could take weeks.
The incident highlights the industry’s over-reliance on digital technology, cloud-based solutions, and artificial intelligence (AI), underscoring the need for airports to remain flexible and resilient with robust contingency plans in place.
