Magnificat overcame a slow start against Medina in the OHSAA Division I regional final, eventually securing a 51-36 victory. After trailing 12-7 in the first quarter, the Blue Streaks settled in and went on a 16-2 run to take a lead at halftime. Junior Sofia Wilson and Julia Hall led the team in scoring with 20 and 12 points, respectively.
The Blue Streaks continued their strong play in the second half, maintaining control of the game and never allowing Medina to go on a significant run. Senior Brynn Roggenburk played a key role on defense, holding Medina’s top scorer to just 5 points on 2-of-14 shooting. While Roggenburk only scored one point herself, she emphasized the importance of selfless play and taking pride in her defensive efforts.
For head coach Danny Gallagher and Magnificat, the win marks a significant milestone as they advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 2002. Gallagher expressed relief and excitement at achieving this long-term goal, acknowledging the hard work and dedication that has gone into building the program.
Magnificat will face Olmsted Falls in the state semifinals on Friday, March 15 at the University of Dayton Arena. Gallagher encouraged the team’s fans to celebrate the victory and support the team as they continue their journey towards a potential state championship.
