Refugee Arrival Origins in Ohio

In recent years, the United States has seen a rise in the number of refugees arriving in the country, with over 60,000 refugees entering the U.S. during the 2023 fiscal year. In 2024, the top countries of origin for refugees admitted to the U.S. were Venezuela, Afghanistan, and Congo. These nations have been dealing with various issues such as inflation, violence, and civil unrest, prompting millions of people to flee to neighboring countries and seek refuge elsewhere.

Data from the Refugee Processing Center showed that in June 2024, Ohio welcomed refugees primarily from Congo, Venezuela, and Somalia, with a total of 42, 34, and 25 refugees respectively. Overall, the U.S. accepted the most refugees from Venezuela, Afghanistan, Congo, Syria, and Somalia during the same month.

Among the states that accepted the most refugees in June were Texas, California, New York, Florida, and Arizona. These states have been pivotal in providing a new home for many individuals seeking safety and a better future. Despite challenges, efforts to increase refugee admissions are ongoing, showcasing the United States’ commitment to supporting those fleeing conflict and persecution.

As the world continues to face humanitarian crises, the U.S. remains a key player in resettling refugees and providing them with the opportunity for a fresh start. With ongoing efforts to raise refugee admissions, the country continues to uphold its long-standing tradition of offering refuge to those in need.
