Ohio State University has made the decision to fire basketball coach Chris Holtmann in the midst of a disappointing 14-11 regular season. After a strong 12-2 start, the Buckeyes struggled to maintain their momentum, losing five of their last six games.
Holtmann, who had a 137-86 record in seven seasons with the team, had previously led the Buckeyes to the NCAA tournament in four of his first six seasons. However, this season saw the team finish with a less-than-stellar 16-19 record.
Prior to coaching at Ohio State, Holtmann had successful stints at Gardner-Webb and Butler. His overall record as a Division I collegiate coach stands at 251-171 in 422 games.
The firing of Holtmann comes as a surprise to many, given his past success with the Buckeyes. The team will now be looking to move forward under new leadership as they prepare to host No. 2 Purdue in their upcoming game on Sunday.
The decision to part ways with Holtmann reflects the university’s desire to see the basketball program return to its winning ways. Fans and supporters will be watching closely to see how the team responds to this coaching change as they continue to navigate the remainder of the season.
