Hall County girl, 12, located in Ohio with man she met online, reports WSB-TV Channel 2

Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch announced that 12-year-old Maria Gomez-Perez, who went missing from her Gainesville home in May, has been found safe in Dover, Ohio. She was located with a 34-year-old man she met online named Antonio Agustin, a Guatemalan native. Maria had been chatting with Agustin and other adult men through Facebook Messenger, expressing her unhappiness at home. Agustin drove from Ohio to Georgia to pick her up and take her back to Ohio.

After Maria messaged her father through a new Facebook account, investigators were able to track her location using the IP address from that message. Agustin has since been arrested and is being held in jail. A $50,000 reward had been offered for information leading to Maria’s whereabouts.

Channel 2 Action News has been covering Maria’s case since she disappeared. Sheriff Couch emphasized that this situation serves as a reminder of the dangers of online interactions with strangers. Viewers can follow updates on Maria’s case on Channel 2 Action News.

The swift resolution of Maria’s case highlights the importance of community involvement and law enforcement efforts in protecting vulnerable individuals. Sheriff Couch’s thorough investigation and coordination with authorities in Ohio led to Maria’s safe return. Parents are urged to monitor their children’s online activities and educate them about the risks of communicating with unknown individuals.
