The United Nations reports that 86% of Gaza is under Israeli evacuation orders as violence continues to escalate, resulting in the death of 33 Palestinians in a single day. Thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee their homes in refugee camps, with reports of attacks on schools turned into shelters for the displaced. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has bombed areas previously declared as safe zones, leading to more casualties.
The ongoing offensive has also led to a health emergency in Gaza, with the Ministry of Health declaring it a “polio endemic area.” The World Health Organization has confirmed the spread of the polio virus in sewage samples, posing a serious threat to the residents of Gaza and neighbouring countries. The WHO is sending over one million polio vaccines to Gaza to prevent further infections.
Amidst the escalating violence, Israel and Hamas have failed to make progress in reaching a ceasefire and hostage release deal, with both sides blaming each other for the lack of advancement. Hamas accuses Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of adding new conditions to a truce proposal, while Netanyahu denies making any changes and accuses Hamas of insisting on numerous modifications.
The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with displaced Palestinians facing dire circumstances and a growing health crisis. International efforts to mediate a ceasefire and provide assistance to those affected by the conflict have so far been unsuccessful.
