Debate on the Need for Meat-Based Protein Reignites During Olympics


The Paris Olympics have sparked controversy in Brussels after athletes voiced their dissatisfaction with the lack of animal protein-rich food at the Olympic Village. The German men’s hockey team described the food as a “disaster,” and British athletes even flew in a chef to supplement the menu. The CEO of the UK Olympic Association expressed concerns about the lack of protein, particularly chicken and eggs, and the serving of raw meat.

The Paris 2024 Food Vision aimed to reduce the carbon footprint of the Games by serving locally sourced, seasonal food with reduced animal protein compared to previous Olympics. However, following the athlete complaints, adjustments were made to increase animal proteins in the meals served.

In response to the food issues at the Olympics, Christiane Lambert, president of the EU farmers’ lobby, criticized the shift away from animal protein, while the European Vegetarian Union welcomed the emphasis on plant-based options and local sourcing. The EVU emphasized that plant-based diets can support athletic performance and muscle recovery without any disadvantages and called for education on plant-based alternatives.

The debate highlights conflicting views on the role of animal protein in athletes’ diets and the broader discussion around promoting plant-based diets for sustainability. The issue has reignited conversations about dietary needs based on factors such as age, gender, physical activity, and cultural traditions. The discussions in Brussels reflect the ongoing tension between different dietary approaches and the need for a balanced and informed perspective on nutrition for athletes.
