Protests in Bangladesh against prime minister result in 2 fatalities and multiple injuries

Protests in Bangladesh turned deadly on Friday, resulting in two deaths and over 100 injuries as thousands of protesters gathered in parts of the capital, Dhaka, to rally against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. The unrest follows a violent month in which over 200 people were killed during demonstrations against controversial reforms in the job quota system.

In Dhaka’s Uttara neighborhood, clashes between police and students erupted, with security forces using tear gas and stun grenades to disperse stone-throwing protesters. In Khulna, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, injuring 50 people, and a policeman was killed in Habiganj after an attack on a local ruling party office resulted in the death of an electrician and injuries to 50 others. In Chattogram, protesters set a roadside police guard post on fire after marching following Friday prayers.

What began as peaceful student protests against a government job quota system has evolved into a significant challenge to Hasina’s 15-year rule. The protests, which have included slogans like “down with the autocrat” and demands for justice for the victims, show no signs of calming down. This unprecedented rebellion against the prime minister’s long-standing rule has resulted in a deadly escalation in clashes and violence across the country.
