A recent bar mitzvah event turned into a Covid-19 nightmare for one couple in their 70s. Despite their precautions to avoid shaking hands and maintain distance due to the wife’s breast cancer remission, they both tested positive for the virus after a family friend revealed his wife had stayed home sick with Covid.
The couple became extremely ill, along with the parents of the bar mitzvah boy and a few others, leading them to believe the family friend was the probable spreader. The furious guest blames the in-laws for allowing the friend to attend despite knowing his wife was ill, while the sister-in-law demands an apology for the outburst.
Advice columnist R. Eric Thomas acknowledges the guest’s valid feelings but suggests letting go of resentment towards the in-laws as it won’t change the situation. He points out that while precautions could have been taken, the guest attendance was not a stipulation set by the couple.
Thomas encourages setting boundaries moving forward, and while the stepdaughter believes they are being unfair, he supports the decision to avoid future events with too many unknowns. Ultimately, it is important to prioritize one’s health and safety in social situations during the pandemic.
