Curfew Imposed in India’s Manipur as Internet Services Cut to Control Rising Violence | Conflict Situation Update

Authorities in India’s northeastern state of Manipur have imposed an indefinite curfew and blocked internet access following student protests against ongoing ethnic violence. The protests were in response to clashes between the predominantly Hindu Meitei and mainly Christian Kukis that have been ongoing for over a year.

The government has shut down internet and mobile data services for five days to prevent the spread of hate speech and misinformation that could incite further violence. The curfew has been implemented in three districts, and authorities have stated that these measures will remain in place until Sunday to bring the situation under control.

The region has seen at least nine deaths and numerous injuries in the past ten days, with armed groups using drones and homemade rockets in the attacks. During protests on Monday, students clashed with security forces, throwing stones and bottles. On Tuesday, police used tear gas to disperse students attempting to march towards the governor’s house.

Student leaders are frustrated with the government’s handling of the conflict, which has left hundreds dead and thousands displaced since last May. They have given the governor 24 hours to respond to their demands, including the removal of top police officials for their failure to control the violence.

Authorities are urging students to engage in peaceful protests and obey the law. Police are investigating the recent attacks, but tensions remain high in Manipur as the ethnic conflict shows no signs of abating.
