Israel claims it is highly probable that its soldiers were responsible for the death of an American-Turkish activist | Latest news on Israel-Palestine conflict

The killing of American-Turkish woman Aysenur Ezgi Eygi at a protest in the occupied West Bank has drawn international attention. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called the killing ‘unprovoked and unjustified,’ while Israeli military says it was unintentional and expresses deep regret. The incident occurred during a demonstration against settlement expansion in Beita, near Nablus. The Israeli military claims Eygi was hit indirectly and unintentionally during a riot involving Palestinian protesters. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that Eygi was shot in the head.

The surge of violence in the West Bank following Israel’s war on Gaza in October has resulted in over 690 Palestinian deaths. The Palestinian Authority held a funeral procession for Eygi in Nablus, with Turkish authorities working to repatriate her body for burial. Eygi’s death has highlighted the need for changes in the rules of engagement for Israeli security forces in the West Bank, according to Blinken.

International attention has been brought to previous incidents of American citizens being killed by Israeli security forces in the West Bank. Human rights groups have criticized Israel for its lack of accountability in such cases, despite the military claiming to thoroughly investigate allegations of civilian killings. The case of Elor Azaria, an Israeli soldier convicted of manslaughter for killing a wounded Palestinian in Hebron, serves as an example of the challenges in holding military personnel accountable for their actions. Eygi’s death adds to the ongoing debate regarding the use of force by Israeli forces in the West Bank.
