CHICAGO – Rookie Joey Cantillo flirted with perfection on Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, retiring the first 20 Chicago batters he faced before giving up a hit to Andrew Benintendi. Despite losing the perfect game bid, Cantillo put together the best start of his career mixing his fastball and changeup. Cleveland’s manager Stephen Vogt was faced with a tough decision of whether to push Cantillo past his usual pitch count with playoffs still up in the air. Cantillo gave up one more hit before being pulled after 99 pitches in Cleveland’s 5-3 win.
In Tuesday night’s game, right-hander Ben Lively will take the mound for Cleveland against right-hander Jonathan Cannon. Lively is looking to bounce back after two rough starts while the Guardians have found success against left-handed starters with a 29-11 record, the best in the league.
Looking ahead, the Guardians have a busy schedule with a four-game series against the Rays followed by an important four-game series against the Twins at Progressive Field. They will then wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
Wednesday’s game will feature LHP Matthew Boyd facing off against RHP Davis Martin at 2:10 p.m. ET. The rest of the series will be televised on Bally Sports Great Lakes, WTAM, WMMS, and the Guardians radio network. Stay tuned for more exciting matchups as the Guardians make a final push towards the playoffs.
