Pakistan police detain members of former PM Imran Khan’s party, including lawmakers and leaders | Political news

Police in Pakistan have arrested several lawmakers and leaders from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party in a series of raids in Islamabad. The crackdown comes after a major PTI rally demanding Khan’s release from jail, where he has been for over a year. The number of arrests is disputed, with police saying four were detained and PTI claiming 13 were picked up from various locations in the capital, including some outside parliament. The arrests started with PTI president Gohar Khan being taken into custody, while senior leaders Shoaib Shaheen and Sher Afzal Marwat were also held. The crackdown follows Khan’s removal as prime minister in 2022 after a falling-out with military generals. Despite PTI winning the most seats in a general election earlier this year, they were unable to form a government, leading to a ruling alliance led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The rally calling for Khan’s release was marred by clashes between supporters and police, with PTI accusing the police of using tear gas to disperse the peaceful assembly. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur criticized the ruling alliance and the military at the rally, warning against any attempt at a military trial for Khan. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused Gandapur of threatening to free Khan by force and inciting violence. PTI quoted Khan as thanking his supporters for peacefully holding the rally and standing up to fight.
