Venezuela’s opposition leader, María Corina Machado, has stated in an interview with Euronews that “Europe is with us,” following the European Parliament’s recognition of Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the legitimate winner of Venezuela’s presidential elections. Machado described the resolution as “historic,” emphasizing the importance of European support in ousting President Maduro’s regime. She stressed that Venezuela’s future is crucial for European security and appealed for greater action from the Spanish government.
Although Spain’s Congress and Senate have also recognized Gonzalez as the elected president, Machado urged the Spanish government to take further steps in supporting democracy in Venezuela. She called for Spain’s prime minister to officially recognize Gonzalez, aligning with the European Parliament’s decision.
Machado’s comments come amidst heightened tensions in Venezuela, where several individuals, including two Spaniards, two Czechs, and three US nationals, have been detained for an alleged murder attempt on President Maduro. The governments of the respective countries have denied these allegations.
The opposition leader’s statements underscore the ongoing political turmoil in Venezuela and the international community’s role in supporting democratic values in the country. The European Parliament’s resolution and Machado’s advocacy for European involvement highlight the significance of global solidarity in addressing the crisis in Venezuela.
