The Brennan Center for Justice has spoken out on Ohio’s gerrymandering issue, highlighting the state’s broken redistricting process that allows politicians to draw unfair voting districts in closed-door settings. Despite multiple rulings by the Ohio Supreme Court deeming these maps unconstitutional, politicians have continued to manipulate the system for their own benefit, resulting in Republican supermajorities in the Ohio House and Senate. Issue 1 aims to address this problem by preventing politicians and lobbyists from serving on the redistricting commission, ensuring fair representation for voters. However, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and others have attempted to sabotage Issue 1 with deceptive ballot language in a desperate bid to maintain their power. The Brennan Center urges Ohioans to see through these tactics and vote “yes” on Issue 1 to bring about much-needed reforms to the state’s redistricting process.
