Massillon Tigers hold on to surprise St. Edward Eagles on their home turf

In a highly anticipated matchup between the defending state champions in Divisions I and II, the Massillon Tigers emerged victorious over the St. Edward Eagles, with a final score of 31-21. The game was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to move the ball for much of the second half until Massillon’s Mylan Lenix broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The Tigers’ head coach, Nate Moore, praised his team for their hard work and dedication, as well as the support of their passionate fan base. Friday’s game marked the first meeting between the two powerhouse programs since 2017, and the first time they faced off coming off recent state title wins.

Despite an early lead by Massillon, St. Edward fought back with impressive plays from their quarterback, Thomas Csanyi, and wide receiver Zach Hackleman. However, the Tigers’ defense held strong, with key stops and turnovers that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.

Both teams showcased their talent and determination throughout the matchup, with standout performances from players like Ja’Meir Gamble and Jalen Slaughter for Massillon, and Csanyi and Bradley Eaton for St. Edward. The game came down to the wire, but in the end, it was Massillon’s ability to capitalize on opportunities and make big plays when it mattered most that secured their victory.

With this win, the Tigers improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 3-1. The long-awaited showdown between the two state champions delivered on the hype, providing an exciting and hard-fought contest that showcased the best of high school football in Ohio.
