United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply concerned about the escalating violence in the city of el-Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan. He has called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander to immediately cease their attack, warning that further escalation could lead to intercommunal conflict throughout the Darfur region. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has already resulted in thousands of casualties and displaced persons.
The United States National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, has indicated that the conflict in Sudan will be discussed during a meeting between President Joe Biden and United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sudan has accused the UAE of supporting the RSF, further complicating the situation. The UN has warned that the civilian population in el-Fasher is at risk of mass violence as the fighting intensifies.
The UN Security Council has adopted resolutions calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in el-Fasher, and the International Criminal Court has raised concerns about possible war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Darfur. The UN’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission has also called for an independent force in Sudan and the expansion of an arms embargo to protect civilians.
With tensions escalating in Darfur, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians. The international community, including the United Nations and the United States, must continue to pressure all sides to end the violence and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan.
