Congress strikes temporary agreement to prevent shutdown until after election

Congressional leaders have reached an agreement on a short-term spending bill that will fund federal agencies for three months, preventing a government shutdown when the new budget year begins on October 1. The deal came after House Speaker Mike Johnson’s attempt to link temporary funding with a voting requirement failed to garner enough support. Bipartisan negotiations led to the decision to extend funding until mid-December, allowing the current Congress to work on a full-year spending bill after the November election. The agreement was described as “very narrow, bare-bones” and includes only necessary extensions. The bill also includes additional funding for the Secret Service, disaster relief, and the presidential transition. The move was seen as a practical decision to avoid a government shutdown less than 40 days before the election, with lawmakers on both sides expressing a reluctance for brinksmanship that could lead to a shutdown. The bipartisan majority is expected to pass the short-term measure and avert a government shutdown.
