France deploys forbidden anti-riot force to Martinique as protestors defy ban

Last week, violent protests erupted on the French Caribbean island of Martinique over the high cost of living, resulting in injuries to six police officers and one civilian. In response, France has sent a group of special anti-riot police, known as the Companies for Republican Security, to the island, despite their ban for 65 years. The local government had forbidden demonstrations in certain municipalities and imposed a curfew following the unrest.

The arrival of the riot police was met with defiance by many residents, who continued to peacefully protest against the high cost of living. While the elite force had been accused of using disproportionate force in the past, they were called upon amid the recent protests in Martinique. Some local leaders criticized the deployment of the riot police, calling for open and transparent dialogue between protesters and the government.

French officials defended their decision, citing the need to end violence, damage, and disruption caused by the protests. Videos from local media showed thousands of residents peacefully marching through the streets, waving flags and banging drums. The situation in Martinique remains tense as residents push for better living conditions while the presence of the riot police adds a new dynamic to the ongoing protests.
