Israel launched a series of air attacks in southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday, resulting in the deaths of 274 people and injuring over 1,000 others. The Israeli military targeted areas where it claimed Hezbollah stored weapons, prompting thousands of residents to flee southern Lebanon and causing major congestion on the highway to Beirut. The attacks came in response to Hezbollah firing over 100 rockets into northern Israel, with some landing near Haifa. Hezbollah’s rockets were retaliation for an Israeli air strike in a Beirut suburb that killed a top Hezbollah military commander, along with others including civilians.
The Israeli military stated that it hit 300 targets linked to Hezbollah weapons sites and planned to expand the operation to the Bekaa Valley along Lebanon’s eastern border. Residents of southern Lebanon shared images on social media documenting the destruction in their towns as a result of the air strikes. Last week, a series of explosions targeted communication devices used by Hezbollah members, resulting in 39 fatalities and nearly 3,000 injuries. Lebanon blamed Israel for the attacks, but Israel did not confirm or deny its involvement. The escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah has resulted in a significant loss of life and has led to a growing humanitarian crisis in the region.
