Maldives leader calls for accountability over alleged ‘genocide’ in Gaza by Israel | Israel-Palestine conflict updates

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu spoke out against Israel’s actions in Gaza, accusing them of committing genocide and other violations of international law. He called for accountability for the crimes and highlighted Israel’s attacks on journalists as an attempt to cover them up. Muizzu also urged for Palestine to be accepted as a full member of the UN, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In addition to his stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Muizzu made a plea for more support in combatting the climate crisis, which poses a significant threat to the low-lying Maldives. He emphasized the urgent need for rich countries and carbon emitters to fulfill financial pledges to help developing countries adapt to climate change, calling for increased funding as the COP29 conference approaches in November.

Muizzu’s remarks come as Israel and Hezbollah engage in cross-border conflict, raising concerns about a larger regional conflagration. The Maldives government had previously announced a ban on Israelis from entering the country, in response to public anger over the conflict in Gaza. Overall, Muizzu’s statements at the UN General Assembly highlighted the urgent need for accountability, support for Palestine, and action on climate change.
