NASA is preparing to bring astronauts Wilmore and Williams back to Earth from the ISS, with the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft set to launch on Thursday. The Crew-9 mission has been cut down to make room for the stranded astronauts on the return trip, with Hague and Gorbunov piloting the capsule. The decision was made based on spaceflight experience and other factors. While they wait for their return in February 2025, Wilmore and Williams are assisting with maintenance and experiments on the ISS. Hague and Gorbunov will become members of Expedition 72 upon their arrival. The unique challenge of integrating the stranded astronauts into Dragon operations is being met with training and support from ground teams. The Dragon spacecraft has flown previous missions and the stranded crew is excited for the opportunity to fly in two different spacecraft. Upon arrival on the ISS, Hague and Gorbunov will be welcomed by Crew-8 before taking on new research for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit. Cardman and Wilson, who were bumped from the SpaceX flight, may fly on future missions. The video above provides more information on this developing story.
