New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing a federal corruption investigation, according to the New York Times. It is still unclear what charges the 64-year-old mayor will face once the indictment is released, making him the first sitting New York City mayor to be criminally charged. Federal prosecutors are expected to reveal the details of the charges soon.
The news of the investigation comes as some of Adams’ closest aides and advisers have come under federal scrutiny, with high-ranking officials within the administration having their homes raided by federal agents. The mayor’s administration has yet to provide a comment on the situation.
As barriers were set up outside Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s residence, City Hall officials were reportedly aware of the imminent indictment of Adams causing panic among staff members. Despite the investigation, Adams has indicated his intention to fight the charges and remain in office.
The federal investigations into Adams’ administration first came to light in November 2023 when FBI agents raided the home of his chief fundraiser. Additional raids on the homes of other officials followed, with devices confiscated from the mayor himself as well.
Multiple inquiries involve senior Adams aides, their relatives, campaign fundraising, and potential influence peddling within the police and fire departments, according to sources familiar with the investigations. Federal prosecutors have declined to comment on the ongoing cases.
