Lakewood, Ohio is hosting its first ever Active Aging Week celebration, showcasing that individuals over the age of 50 can thrive in all aspects of life. The weeklong event, beginning on September 30th, will feature free activities at various locations around the city, promoting healthy living and social connection for older adults. Participants are encouraged to engage in activities that focus on the seven dimensions of wellness: emotional, mental, physical, professional, social, spiritual, and environmental.
The highlight of the week will be Active Aging Community Day on October 2nd at Lakewood Park, offering a wide range of activities for participants to enjoy. The event aims to challenge stereotypes about aging and encourage seniors to stay active and engaged in their communities.
The Human Services Department, which is organizing the event, hopes that it will attract residents who are unaware of the services they provide. They want to show that there is more to offer than just bingo and other activities, including free exercise classes.
City officials are optimistic that the Active Aging Week celebration will become an annual event, growing in size and attracting more community partners each year. The goal is to continue challenging negative perceptions of aging and promoting healthy, active lifestyles for older adults in the community.
