Lebanese civilians enduring challenges and exploitation while escaping Israeli airstrikes | News on Israel-Lebanon conflict

Over 700 people, including men, women, and children, have been killed in Israel’s bombing of south Lebanon, leading to a humanitarian crisis. Hezbollah initiated cross-border skirmishes in an attempt to relieve pressure on Gaza, where thousands have been killed and displaced by Israeli forces. Despite Western calls for a ceasefire, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused, vowing to continue bombing Hezbollah until all objectives are achieved. The heavy bombardment has displaced over 90,000 people, with landlords in Beirut reportedly raising prices to profit from the crisis.
Experts warn that Israel’s escalation of conflict in mainly Shia-populated regions is an attempt to provoke Hezbollah into retaliating, leading to further destruction in Lebanon. Tensions between Shia and non-Shia communities are evident, with some hesitant to accept displaced people believed to be Hezbollah members. While non-Shia regions have been spared for now, civilians from south Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley feel they are already living through an all-out war. Many, like Ali, fear for their loved ones’ lives but understand their desire to remain on their land with dignity. Calls for a negotiated ceasefire are met with caution, as many expect Israel to further escalate its bombardment if talks fail.
