Freshman Rep. Tim Barhorst Enters Ohio Speaker Race, Taking on Senate President

Press Release: Shift in Ohio House Speaker Race as Incumbent Steps Aside

Columbus, OH – The race for the Ohio House speaker position underwent a dramatic change on Monday when incumbent Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hill) announced he would not run against Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima) in the upcoming GOP caucus vote scheduled for Wednesday. This development created an opening for freshman lawmaker Rep. Tim Barhorst (R-Ft. Loramie), who has emerged as a surprising contender.

Barhorst highlighted the challenges faced during his first term, noting the unprecedented low passage of just 55 bills, the fewest in decades. He lamented the "dysfunction" within the House, calling for leadership from within rather than importing someone from the Senate to "save" the chamber. Concerns have erupted over Huffman’s funding of primary challengers to those who supported Stephens in previous votes, breeding further division.

Barhorst is supported by conservative factions, including Ohio Gun Owners and End Abortion Now, advocating for an uncompromising approach to key conservative issues. He expressed skepticism about Huffman’s commitment to a conservative agenda, emphasizing his vision for unity among lawmakers. “I can mend fences,” he stated, confident in his capability to foster collaboration among various groups within the party.

Meanwhile, other potential candidates are emerging, notably Rep. Ron Ferguson (R-Wintersville), a key supporter of Rep. Derek Merrin, who previously won a private caucus vote. Ferguson’s potential backing could bolster Barhorst’s bid, as he claims to have a clear path to the speakership.

As the lame duck session approaches, the race remains tense, with Stephens yet to endorse a candidate. The outcome of Wednesday’s vote will determine the future direction of the Republican caucus as it navigates internal challenges.
