Ohio Senator Niraj Antani (R-6) has introduced a bill, SB 190, to reduce the state’s sports betting tax rate from 20% back to the original 10% rate when sports betting was first launched in January 2023. This move comes after Ohio increased its sports betting tax rate to 20% last year. Antani argues that the current tax rate puts Ohio at a disadvantage compared to neighboring states and is detrimental to smaller license holders.
In addition to the sports betting tax rate reduction bill, Antani has also introduced legislation, SB 312, to legalize iGaming in Ohio. Under this bill, casinos and racinos in the state would be eligible to apply for a license to offer online casino gaming. Online slots and table games would be taxed at a rate of 15%. The Ohio Casino Control Commission would serve as the regulator for online casino gaming.
However, the legalization of iGaming in Ohio faces opposition. A study on the future of Ohio gaming published earlier this year showed split support for iGaming and iLottery legalization in the state. In the meantime, Antani is pushing for the reduction of the sports betting tax rate as a way to make Ohio more competitive in the region. The bill also includes provisions for fees and contributions to problem gambling and addiction funds.
If passed, the reduction in tax rate from 20% to 10% could impact Ohio’s sports betting tax revenue, potentially halving the amount of revenue generated over a given period. Antani’s efforts to lower the tax rate and legalize iGaming in Ohio will be closely monitored as they navigate the legislative process.
