Left-handed pitchers Tarik Skubal and Chris Sale had a successful night as they were voted the AL and NL Cy Young winners, respectively, by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Skubal and Sale both achieved pitching triple crowns in their respective leagues, marking their first Cy Young wins. In the American League, Skubal went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA, while Sale in the National League recorded an 18-3 record with a 2.38 ERA.
Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase finished third in the AL voting behind Skubal and Kansas City’s Seth Lugo. Clase, the first closer to be a Cy Young finalist since 2008, received a $150,000 bonus for his third-place finish. He led the AL in saves for the past three years and posted a 0.61 ERA in 74 games this season.
In the NL, Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler came in second behind Sale, while Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes, this year’s NL Rookie of the Year, finished third. Sale earned the Cy Young with 198 points, including 24 first place votes, while Wheeler received 130 points.
Skubal and Sale’s victories marked a significant moment in their careers and were a testament to their pitching prowess throughout the season. The recognition by the BBWAA solidified their positions as two of the top left-handed pitchers in the league.
