Northeast Ohio Experiences First Winterlike Snowfall
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Northeast Ohio was hit with its first significant snowfall of the season on Thursday night, as lake-effect snow swept across the region. The National Weather Service reported that Highland Heights recorded the highest snowfall with 6.8 inches by 9 p.m. Meanwhile, Mentor-on-the-Lake received 6 inches.
The heaviest snowfall impacted Lake, Geauga, and eastern Cuyahoga counties, traditionally known for their substantial snowfalls. Snowfall continued in several areas into the early hours of Friday. While forecasters predicted total accumulations could reach up to 8 inches in some locations, official totals were still being determined as of early Friday morning. Notably, Chardon, often referred to as the heart of the snow belt, saw less than half an inch Thursday night.
However, this winter weather is not expected to remain for long. In contrast to Thursday’s snow, Friday’s forecast calls for temperatures nearing 50 degrees, accompanied by rain and wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph, which will rapidly melt the existing snow cover.
The snowfall data reported includes various local measurements:
- Lyndhurst: 5.5 inches
- Euclid: 4.5 inches
- Mentors-on-the-Lake: 6 inches
- Woodmere: 2.7 inches
- Chagrin Falls: 2.2 inches
- Others, including Shaker Heights and Russell Township, reported less significant amounts ranging from 0.5 to 1.4 inches.
As residents prepare for a weather shift from winter wonderland to milder conditions, this early snow may serve as a reminder of the winter days ahead in Northeast Ohio.
