A shocking incident at the Ascension Living Valley Residence in Chattanooga, Tenn., has led to the arrest of a certified nursing assistant (CNA) for allegedly abusing a 90-year-old Alzheimer’s patient during a shower. According to Chattanooga Police, the CNA, identified as Gary Christopher Crownover, threw the elderly man out of the shower, beat him, and made disturbing remarks about his death.
The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when the victim, who required assistance from two CNAs for his shower, reportedly hit Crownover in the face, causing him to become enraged. Crownover then allegedly pulled the victim out of the shower chair, dropped him to the floor, and proceeded to strike him multiple times before verbally abusing him.
Upon discovering injuries on the victim, including a knee wound and redness on his eye, the other CNA immediately reported the incident to her supervisor, who contacted the authorities. Crownover was subsequently arrested and charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult.
In response to the incident, Ascension Living released a statement emphasizing their commitment to resident and associate safety. The facility confirmed that Crownover has been dismissed from his position and is prohibited from accessing the premises. They are working closely with law enforcement to address the situation.
The disturbing abuse case highlights the importance of vigilance and accountability within healthcare facilities caring for vulnerable populations. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to ensure justice is served and that measures are in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
