Australia defeated the United States in the Davis Cup in a hard-fought 2-1 victory. The US had a strong team led by Taylor Fritz, who beat Alex de Minaur in the second singles rubber. However, Australia’s Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson secured a win in the doubles rubber. Thanasi Kokkinakis also won a thrilling tie-break against Ben Shelton in the opening clash. Australia, with 28 Davis Cup wins, last won in 2003 and finished as runners-up in the last two editions.
Fritz was strong for the US, but Kokkinakis, Ebden, and Thompson’s efforts led Australia to victory. Kokkinakis saved match points and eventually won the tie-break. Fritz acknowledged the pressure of playing in the Davis Cup but performed well. US captain Bryan’s choice of singles players over doubles specialists did not pay off as Australia won the pivotal doubles rubber.
Australia’s captain, Lleyton Hewitt, was proud of his team’s effort. The defending champions, Italy, were set to face Argentina later, with the winner facing Australia in the semi-finals. The Netherlands, who defeated Spain, were set to battle Germany in the first semi-final. The Davis Cup quarter-finals showcased impressive performances from both the Australian and American teams, with Australia ultimately emerging victorious.
