The first game of the CHL-USA Prospects Challenge saw the Canadian team of top draft-eligible prospects defeating the U.S. national team development program 6-1. Lynden Lakovic scored the opening goal for the Canadians, who then went on to score three more goals in the second period by Cameron Schmidt, Brady Martin, and Matthew Schaefer. Malcolm Spence and Kashawn Aitcheson added goals in the third period. Jack Murtagh scored the lone goal for the U.S. team. Schaefer was named player of the game for his performance. The game had over 300 NHL staffers in attendance, including Pittsburgh Penguins president Kyle Dubas. The teams will play a second game in Oshawa, Ont., with the potential for a sudden-death overtime period if the U.S. team wins to determine the overall victor. This series has replaced the CHL Top Prospects game which used to feature 40 of the league’s best players in a different format.
