Gov. Mike DeWine Signs Controversial Transgender Bathroom Bill in Ohio
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has officially signed Senate Bill 104, a legislation mandating that state schools and universities designate bathrooms and similar facilities for exclusive use based on the sex assigned to students at birth. While the governor’s office has yet to make a public announcement, State Rep. Adam Bird confirmed the signing after being informed by an aide.
Proponents, mainly Republican lawmakers, have framed the bill as a necessary measure to enhance the safety of girls and women in bathrooms and locker rooms. However, critics—including Democratic lawmakers and LGBTQ-rights advocates—have labeled the legislation as discriminatory against a vulnerable population. Officials at various state universities reported to Signal Statewide that they were previously unaware of bathroom usage being problematic on campus.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Ohio has indicated that it may pursue legal action against the bill, which emerged as part of a broader push by Republican lawmakers to impose restrictions on transgender individuals, particularly minors. This follows a recent law passed late last year, which prohibited gender-related treatments for minors, despite Governor DeWine’s initial veto. The legislature successfully overturned this veto due to their significant majority.
As the legal battles surrounding these laws unfold, the state has already seen a Franklin County judge weigh in, allowing the transgender athlete restriction to proceed during the court proceedings. This recent legislation marks a significant shift in Ohio’s policy landscape regarding transgender rights, as advocates prepare to challenge its validity in court.
