Record Thanksgiving Travel Expected in Ohio Amid Safety Concerns
Ohio is set for a record-breaking Thanksgiving travel season, with AAA estimating that 3.2 million residents will hit the roads, nearly 3 million of whom will be driving. As holiday traffic increases, AAA emphasizes the importance of vehicle maintenance to mitigate accidents and mechanical failures.
Kara Hitchens of AAA highlights the critical nature of roadway safety, particularly under the ‘move over’ law, designed to protect tow truck operators and emergency personnel. "A tow truck driver is killed every six days across the country," she warned, urging drivers to stay alert and give ample space to roadside workers.
The Ohio State Patrol plans a significant presence on the roads to enhance safety and assist drivers. Sergeant Tyler Ross stresses the importance of situational awareness, especially as distractions, such as cellphone use, can lead to dangerous scenarios. Last year’s Thanksgiving saw 13 fatalities, including several caused by drunk driving.
As colder weather approaches, the potential for rain turning into snow adds another layer of complexity for travelers. Hitchens advises those flying to utilize airline mobile apps for real-time updates on delays and cancellations.
Additionally, electric vehicle (EV) users will find greater accessibility this holiday season, with Ohio boasting 15 operational charging stations, up from just two last year. This expansion is part of the $7.5 billion New Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. Breanna Badanes from DriveOhio notes that nearly half of all new charging stations are in Ohio, with six more set to open soon.
With Ohio dispatching over $30 million for the installation of charging stations strategically located along interstates, drivers can charge most EVs in about half an hour. However, there will be fees associated with using these facilities.
As Ohio gears up for one of its busiest travel seasons, safety remains a paramount concern for drivers and commuters alike.
