Following a contentious football game between North Carolina State and North Carolina that saw N.C. State emerge victorious, tensions flared as members of the Wolfpack attempted to plant their flag at midfield, where the Tar Heel logo sits. This gesture sparked a brawl between the two teams, with punches being thrown and players having to be separated. UNC receiver J.J. Jones even grabbed the flag and threw it into the stands before getting into a confrontation with a N.C. State player. Eventually, the Wolfpack celebrated with their fans as the incident was diffused.
This altercation was not an isolated incident over the weekend, as rival teams across the country were involved in similar scuffles. However, in other matchups such as Florida vs. Florida State, the situation was quickly resolved without physical altercations.
The game between N.C. State and UNC marked the end of Mack Brown’s tenure as the Tar Heels’ coach, with the school announcing he will not return next year. N.C. State secured the win with a late touchdown, while Florida also emerged victorious over Florida State. Both the Wolfpack and Tar Heels are now awaiting bowl game destinations, with the latter also in search of a new coach. The Gators will also be looking ahead to their bowl game, while the Seminoles finished the season with a disappointing 2-10 record.
