Cleveland Kicks Off Holiday Season with Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The holiday spirit took center stage in Cleveland on Saturday as hundreds gathered at Public Square for the city’s beloved annual tree lighting, a hallmark of the WinterLand event organized by the Downtown Cleveland Alliance. Families and visitors flocked to the downtown area to embrace the festive atmosphere, despite the chilly temperatures dipping into the 20s.
"This event brings family together to celebrate something special," shared Ashley Pences, 27, of Middleburg Heights, who attended with her two young children. Pences expressed her desire to make the tree lighting an enduring family tradition. "Even though it’s Cleveland and it’s cold, it’s so pretty at night," she added, enjoying the seasonal decor.
The evening was filled with activities, including ice skating, face painting, live music, and fireworks, creating a magical environment. This cherished event, which has been a staple for nearly 40 years, takes place annually on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
The arrival of Santa Claus added to the excitement, as he made a grand entrance alongside Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, delighting attendees. First-time visitors Alyssa Quinn and her family, who traveled from Twinsburg, embraced the opportunity to explore downtown Cleveland and get into the holiday spirit. Quinn noted, “It gets people downtown who wouldn’t normally come here. It gets us in the spirit, it gets them psyched up for the season,” highlighting the event’s role in drawing families into the city’s festive activities.
As the night progressed, the sense of community and joy was palpable, marking a successful start to the holiday season in Cleveland. With laughter, music, and the glow of lights, the tree lighting celebration brought together residents and visitors alike, fostering a warm, festive environment that will echo throughout the season.
