Democrats are raising concerns over Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s potential involvement in the FirstEnergy bribery scandal. The scandal involved a $61 million bribery scheme to pass a bill that bailed out two nuclear power plants, which ultimately led to the arrest and resignation of former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder.
Ohio Senate Democrats, including Sen. Kenny Yuko and Sen. Cecil Thomas of Cleveland and Sen. Sandra Williams of Cleveland, have sent a letter to the U.S. Justice Department requesting assistance in investigating Governor DeWine’s role in the scandal. They have expressed concerns that DeWine may have signed the bill into law knowing that it was a result of corrupt practices.
In the letter, the Democrats cited DeWine’s close ties to FirstEnergy, as well as his previous actions that may have indicated knowledge of the bribery scheme. They have also pointed out that DeWine received campaign contributions from FirstEnergy during his election campaign.
The Democrats are calling for a thorough investigation to determine the extent of DeWine’s involvement in the scandal and to hold him accountable if he is found to have been complicit in the corrupt practices. They are urging the U.S. Justice Department to take action to ensure transparency and accountability in Ohio’s political system.
Governor DeWine has denied any involvement in the bribery scandal and has stated that he was not aware of the corrupt activities taking place. He has emphasized his commitment to upholding ethical standards and serving the people of Ohio. The U.S. Justice Department has not yet commented on the Democrats’ request for assistance in the investigation.
