Clariant catalyst technology anticipated to reduce 275,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year in Sichuan

Clariant, a specialty chemical company focusing on sustainability, has successfully implemented its EnviCat N2O-S nitrous abatement catalyst at Sichuan Lutianhua’s nitric acid plant. The catalyst is expected to reduce annual emissions by 275,000 tons of CO2e. Sichuan Lutianhua, a winner of Clariant’s global Climate Campaign, received a free load of the catalyst as part of the initiative to help nitric acid producers lacking N2O abatement technology. The plant, located in Sichuan Province, China, began operating in 2009 without an N2O removal system in place.

Xaver Karsunke, Vice President of Clariant Specialty Catalysts, expressed pride in partnering with Sichuan Lutianhua to reduce their carbon footprint through innovative catalyst technology. Sun Guang, Assistant General Manager at Sichuan Lutianhua, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental impact reduction. The installation of the catalyst is a significant step towards achieving emissions reduction goals for the company.

Nitric acid production is essential for fertilizer manufacturing but emits N2O, a potent greenhouse gas. Clariant’s catalyst technology helps remove N2O emissions almost completely from production processes. The company’s Climate Campaign aimed to provide nitric acid producers worldwide with an economical solution for emission reduction as part of broader efforts to support industries in the energy transition. The methodology used to calculate carbon reductions aligns with internationally recognized standards.

Overall, Clariant’s partnership with Sichuan Lutianhua represents a positive step towards achieving sustainability goals in the chemical industry, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
